Kidney Research UK: Esohe Sarah Osagiede - Faith, Music, and the Power of Organ Donation

At Eso Kidney Alive, every story reminds us why we fight for kidney health and organ donation awareness. Today we share the journey of Esohe Sarah Osagiede — a teacher, singer, and advocate whose courage is inspiring thousands.

From the classroom to dialysis Esohe was thriving as a teacher, building her career and chasing her passion for singing. Then kidney disease changed everything.

Taking Awareness to the People

Our outreaches focused on making kidney health information accessible to everyday people in a simple and impactful way.

“I had been excelling in my career as a teacher but had to make the difficult decision to leave that profession because of how much dialysis drained me. It has also prevented me from pursuing my ambitions as a singer. The treatment has limited my life in many ways, making it harder to travel and socialise with friends.”

Dialysis demands time, energy, and sacrifice. For Esohe, it meant pausing the two things she loved most: teaching and music.

Choosing faith while she waits

Like many waiting for a transplant, the uncertainty is heavy. But Esohe holds onto hope.

“I try not to think about when my transplant will happen. I just keep faith that it will happen eventually.”

While she waits for her second transplant, she’s turned her pain into purpose.

Breaking stigma, one story at a time

When Esohe first got sick, fear of stigma kept her quiet. “I worried about people seeing me as fragile.” Now she speaks openly through her TikTok page and through the Eso Kidney Alive Foundation in Nigeria.

Her message is clear: talk about it. Awareness saves lives.

She’s especially focused on organ donation in Black communities. Cultural and religious beliefs often make families hesitant. Esohe understands that hesitation because she felt it too.

“I would probably have shared similar feelings without having been through it myself. Mum was in her 50s when she donated a kidney to me. She’s still healthy and I hope that shows that being a donor is something we can all consider.”

Her mother’s gift proves donors can live full, healthy lives. And organ donation can be life changing.

Dreams after transplant

Goal Image

Esohe isn’t just waiting — she’s planning.

“There is so much I want to do once I’ve had my second transplant. I’d love to get back to teaching and singing. I want to have lots of life experiences and travel more again.”

Her story is a reminder: kidney disease pauses life, but it doesn’t have to end it.

Know your kidney health

Esohe’s journey highlights why early detection matters. In the UK alone, an estimated 7.2 million people live with chronic kidney disease — over 10% of the population. Many don’t know it because symptoms hide or mimic other conditions.

Knowing your risk helps you and your doctor protect your kidneys before dialysis or transplant becomes necessary.

If Esohe’s story moved you, share it. Talk to your family about organ donation. And take a kidney health check if you’re at risk.

Organ donation is life changing. Be the reason someone gets their life back.
